Scheduled Events (such as 'On-Demand' or 'Small Group' Sessions)

1.  What is an 'Event' ?

An event consists of one session that is set up for you to attend. It is scheduled to take place at a certain time on a particular date and will consist of either an hour or 30 minutes depending on which you choose to have. An event may be an 'On Demand Session or a 'Small Group' session.

2. What is the difference between 'On-Demand' sessions and 'Small Group' sessions?

'On Demand' sessions are those that you may request to have whenever you need help in a particular subject. ( See 'On Demand' tutoring. ) They are NOT pre-scheduled and involve just you and the tutor for 'one on one' help. You choose when you wish to avail of this service by sending us a request and we set up a  time convenient to you from the three choices which are provided by you in the request form.

A 'Small Group' session is a pre-scheduled event that has been set up by First Class e-Learning  for a certain time.  It will focus on a particular topic, such as a problem area in a subject, review of a unit and/or preparation for a test. You may choose to attend a 'Small Group' session by sending in a request. See the 'Event Calendar' to see which sessions have be scheduled for this week/month. eg

3. How do I attend an 'Event'?

For 'On Demand' Tutoring sessions:

You may request an 'On Demand' session for homework help by filling in a request form. In your request, you provide a time that is convenient for you. Once a match is made with the appropriate tutor, you are sent an email confirming the time of the session and asked to make a payment. Next you are sent a 'link' in your email that will take you to the virtual classroom. Click on the link. It will take you to the 'Event Center'. For first time users of the virtual classroom, you will need to download and install a plug in. Just follow the instructions given. It will take just a moment and you will only have to do this one time.

For 'Small Group' Sessions:

( See 'Small Group' sessions for more information on how to take part in a 'Small Group Session'. )

3.  The link sent to me (by email) for an online event will not work when I click on it.

Some mail accounts will not let you follow a link to another website. You may need to copy and paste the address of the link into a new browser. Just highlight the link, right click with your mouse, and select 'copy'. Next open up a new browser eg. Internet Explorer or Firefox. Then right click with the mouse again to select 'paste' the address into the 'Address window' of the browser. Press 'Enter'. If that does not work, contact support@firstclasselearning.com and we will assist you.

Connecting to the Virtual Classroom

1.  I can't get into the virtual classroom.

First check to see that you have the necessary 'System Requirements'. Our learning platform does not support Windows 98. (You need to have Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows ME, or Windows Vista.) Next, in order to go into the virtual classroom, you need to download and install a plug in. Just follow the instructions given by first clicking on the 'Enter' button.  Continue clicking on the 'Enter' buttons until you receive a popup window which will ask you to download, run and install a java script which is needed to run the virtual classroom. If this does not happen automatically, click on the 'Help' button with the ? mark on it. It will guide you to downloading and installing the the plug in manually.

Audio Problems

1.  My microphone is not working in the virtual classroom.

You have to be given permission by the moderator/tutor to talk in the virtual classroom. If you still experience problems after your microphone has been enabled, go to 'New User's Manual' and click on 'Using the Audio' for more suggestions on how to solve your problem.

2.  I cannot hear when someone is speaking.

If you cannot hear when someone is talking in the virtual classroom, go to the 'Audio Wizard' to test your audio settings and to configure your speakers. The 'Audio Wizard' is located on the top right side of the screen. (See the 'New User's Manual' for more details.)

Other things that you may do include the following:

a) Check the connections of your headset. Make sure that the connections are plugged in to the correct ports on your computer. eg. The connection with the picture of headset gets plugged into the port which also has a picture of a headset; the connection with a picture of a speaker gets plugged in to the port which has a picture of a speaker.

b) Check to make sure the speakers are enabled. Go to the speaker icon on the bottom right of your screen. Click it on. (For some speaker icons, you may need to right-click and look at the different options.) Select 'Playback' devices and make sure that your speakers are enabled.)

More suggestions:

1) If the headset is producing faint or no sound, check the following:

- Is the headset in-line volume control dial turned up?

- Is the computer's sound control panel or system preference set to an audible volume level?

2) If the microphone is not recording, check the following:

- Is the headset's in-line control switched to the mute position?

- Is the computer's sound control panel or system preference set up to record from the headset?

- Is the microphone rotated to the correct position (close to the corner of the mouth)?

Virtual Classroom Tools

1.  When I am in the virtual classroom, I don't see any drawing tools for marking on the white board.

To mark on the white boards, first you have to be given permission from the moderator (tutor). Then you will have 'writing privileges' and will be able to use all the 'drawing tools' which are located on the bottom of your screen. These drawing tools are very similar to those that are used in the Microsoft "Paint" program which may be found on your computer. Go to START, select ACCESSORIES and you will find this program. This is a good place to practise using the 'drawing tools'.
